In January last year,  Zoe was driving in the mountains near Sydney. The air was thick with smoke, but fortunately, she spotted the bare-nosed wombat lying in the road. She stopped to try and help the injured animal, but tragically it had passed away. Then Zoe did a pouch check and found a tiny wombat joey curled up inside.

昨年1月、シドニー近郊の山岳地帯をZoeが車で通りがかったときのことです。あたりの空気は煙のため見通しが悪かったのですが、幸いにもZoe は道路に横たわっているウォンバットに気が付きました。車を止めると、その傷ついた生き物を助けようとしたのですが、残念ながらウォンバットはすでに息絶えていいました。Zoeは、おなかの袋を確認しました。そこには、小さなウォンバットの赤ちゃんが、丸まっていたのです。

●保護された当時のAｓｈ

Zoe knew Anna, a WIRES carer living nearby, so she took the orphaned joey there. Anna told us: “When Zoe arrived, the air was thick with smoke and while we stood talking, we were covered in ash. So we nicknamed the little wombat baby Ash. He spent the next few weeks getting used to being in care, learning how to suck from a silicone teat.”

Zoeは、近所にすむAnnaというWIRESのスタッフを知っていました。そこで彼女は、孤児となってしまった赤ちゃんウォンバットを連れて行きました。 「Zoeが来たとき、空気は煙で曇っていて、話をしている間私たちは灰（ash）まみれになってしまいました。私たちはその小さなウォンバットの赤ん坊を“Ash” と名付けました。　Ashはその後数週間かけて、例えば、哺乳瓶の乳首からミルクを飲む方法など、人間に世話されることに慣れていきました。」

Baby marsupials thrive when they are ‘buddied up’ with each other, so when two new orphaned wombats came in Anna was able to buddy them with little Ash. Within six months Ash was weighing in at 8kgs and the trio were inseparable. Sharing a burrow built by previous occupants of the enclosure.

有袋類の赤ちゃんには、成長を共にする「バディ」が必要です。そこで、Annaのもとへやってきた、2匹のウォンバットの赤ん坊とAshが「バディ」になりました。 6か月後Ashは体重8㎏に成長し、固い絆で結ばれた3匹は、前の住人であった別のウォンバットがつくった巣穴で暮らし始めました。

It’s incredibly sad that each of these wombats had lost their mothers, but the support they were able to provide each other was lifesaving. “When you get one wombat, you have to have a buddy, because they can become too humanized if they rely on me all the time for comfort,” said Anna. “So they get buddied up then learn from each other.”

3匹のウォンバットが母親を亡くしたことは、大変悲しいことでしたが、彼らはともに支えあい生き延びることができたのです。 「一匹のウォンバットには、必ずバディが必要です。すべての安らぎを私に求めてしまっては、人間慣れしすぎるからです。　3匹のウォンバットたちはお互いにバディとなり、互いに学びあうのです。」

The average wombat joey is in care for 18 months and needs round the clock treatment.Ash and his buddies are not the only wombats in Anna’s care. She looks after several wombats at any giving time, like Candy and Ernie who were both orphaned and in desperate need when they were brought to WIRES.

平均的なウォンバットの子供は、18か月の保育期間が必要で、その間は24時間休みない世話が必要です。 アナが世話をしているのは、アッシュとバディの2匹だけではありません。彼女は常時複数のウォンバットを世話しているのです。　写真のキャンディとアーニーも、孤児となり保護が必要な状態でWIRESに連れこられました。

This vital work continues beyond the Black Summer bushfires. Sadly, our iconic wombats are facing many challenges, including significant loss of habitat, motor vehicle incidents, extreme weather events and serious disease.  Wombat buddies are not the only vital partnership when it comes to rescuing and rehabilitating sick, injured, displaced, or orphaned native animals. The partnership between WIRES volunteers and donors like is just as critical.

”Black Summer”の期間を通して継続的にこのような活動が行われてきました。　悲しいことに、私たちのアイコンであるウォンバットは、さまざまな困難に直面しています。　生息地域の減少や、自動車事故、天候不順や病気などです。 傷つき、病気になり、地住処を奪われ、親とはぐれた自然動物にとって、欠かせないパートナーシップは、バディだけではありません。　WIRESのボランティアスタッフと、皆さんのようなドナーのとのパートナーシップもまた、同様に重要なのです。
